The CONASENSE Journey: Building Interdisciplinary 6G Research Since 2012

The CONASENSE Journey: From Founding Vision to Global 6G Collaboration

CONASENSE (Communications, Navigation, Sensing and Services) is a global, volunteer-driven initiative advancing
interdisciplinary 6G research by connecting communities across academia, industry, and institutions.

Founding Vision

CONASENSE was shaped around an interdisciplinary vision presented by Prof. Dr. Ramjee Prasad in 2011 and developed
together with Prof. Marina Ruggieri. The core idea anticipated 6G as an intelligent, heterogeneous wireless system
that delivers not only ubiquitous communication, but also high-accuracy localization and high-resolution sensing.
In this vision, communication, localization, and sensing coexist and share the same time–frequency–spatial resources.

Building on this foundation, CONASENSE continues to address open research questions and develop community-driven
insights on how convergent 6G ecosystems should be designed—human-centric and sustainability-aware by design.

Background

From 2012 onward, CONASENSE evolved into an open, collaborative brainstorming and dissemination platform.
It connects communications research with navigation, sensing, and services—supporting interdisciplinary work that
aligns technical innovation with use cases, sustainability requirements, and standardisation pathways.

Timeline

2011 — Vision presented

The interdisciplinary CONASENSE vision is presented by Prof. Dr. Ramjee Prasad, emphasizing integrated
communication, localization, and sensing as a foundation for future systems.

2012 — CONASENSE begins

CONASENSE is established as a worldwide field of research and investigation, growing as a collaborative effort
to advance interdisciplinary communications research.

2012–2021 — Community formation & outputs

The platform expands through international collaboration, leading to multiple events, publications,
and projects—strengthening CONASENSE as a recognized interdisciplinary brainstorming initiative.

2021 — Platform evolution: fortiss and CGC Memorandum of Understanding

CONASENSE evolves further through a Memorandum of Understanding involving CTIF Global Capsule (CGC),
Aarhus University, and fortiss GmbH—supporting long-term coordination and community activities.

2023–2027 — Focus & technical priorities

The platform aligns around key priorities such as context-awareness, mobility support, adaptation and learning
(AI/ML), and joint computation + networking—while reinforcing contributions across trend scouting,
interdisciplinary topics, use cases, sustainability requirements, and standardisation.

Today — An open platform for interdisciplinary 6G innovation

CONASENSE continues to connect global expertise via working groups, workshops, and publications—supporting
human-centric, sustainable, and standardisation-aware research for 6G and beyond.
